I was surfing today (September 7, 2009) when the phrase "morbid curiosity" caught my attention. Somehow, the phrase seems to imply that there is in human nature a natural tendency to be attracted to the bizarre, the gross and the, well, morbid. Faced with a macabre sight that can turn one's stomach, we cover our eyes but leave a substantial gap between our fingers to permit us a glimpse of that which we do not want to see.
The phrase caught my eye after I learned that "Nikki Catsoura's car crash photos" is the number-one search item on Google right now. As if that was not enough the number fourteen search item is "Nikki Catsoura's death pictures" and number twenty-six is "Nikki Catsouras gruesome pictures." For those who may not be familiar with the story, you may read it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikki_Catsouras
